Emo

*Emo can be considered a noun, verb or adjective.

1) A person that can usually be identified by loads of dark clothing, side-swept bangs that often cover an eye (or both), Chuck Taylor sneakers that may be written on with sharpies, and often times dark eyeliner and facial piercings for both genders. Can also refer to someone that is depressed or has resentment to society, or even inflicts harm upon themselves.

2) A load of bullshit.

3) Simply a name given to music (that is generally angst-y and may contain screaming and crying) so that it may be sorted.

4) To act in such a way that is appalling due to its depressing nature.

((Or even a mixture of any of the above))

"That girl looked so emo! She was wearing a lot of black, and her eyes were hidden behind loads of eyeliner."

"Emo is bullshit!"

"**Insert band name here** is an emo band."

"Don't be so emo."

Emo

Emo was a genre of music that developed out of the failing straight edge movement, especially in the DC area when bands such as Minor Threat and Bad Brains began to lose popularity.
These bands decided to take the energy of punk rock but without the anger, creating emo. Bands include: rites of spring, indian summer, some fugazi, ect. During emos height (84-87), it was generally very emotional, fast, and powerful music. Eventually, it became influenced by pop (much like punk) and is what it is today. It has also become a term to describe someone who is depressed and overly emotional, generally for attention.

I was wondering how Rites of Spring and My Chemical Romance are both labeled Emo and are completely different.

emo

A subculture that borrows heavily from punk, goth and metal. Lacking the interest to actually delve any deeper than fashion and body language the subculture is shallow and empty of ideological substance, cultural history, and original creativity. Popular media and urban folklore attribute the name, "emo" to the word, "emotion" or "emotive." Both incorrect. In the 1980's when this subculture was emerging the response to the appearance and behavior was compared to the comedian, Emo Phillips. The reference caught on, unfortunately the definition never caught up. Punks were the originators of the "emo" reference, which was quickly accepted by goths, metal heads and all tribes hardcore. It is hard to accept that a bunch of punks would have selected the term, "emotional" or "emotive" to insult a group of softcore punks. The truth is that the idiotic humor practiced by the comedian and his idiotic appearance were the inspiration for the insult.

"Yo, that kid looks like emo phillips! Hey emo, I'm gonna kick your ass!" Circa 1980's
