It is the center of U.S. culture, "pop" culture anyway, which is what is most important these days. U.S. culture spreads though the world via film and TV, nearly all of which is conceived and produced in L.A.
A teen watches some L.A. conceived and created movie/TV show once and she/he can be completely moved into certain purchasing modes, political modes, and general lifestyle views.
A giant city, cool place. But a lot of gangs and crime.
