nerd

As it has come to pass, a nerd is apparently a person who dislikes geeks and denounces them as little more than second-rate, wannabe nerds. Anyone who claims to be a nerd is automatically not a nerd (as anyone who claims to be of a particular label is automatically not). True nerds are essentially smart dorks who still look dorky. True geeks, on the other hand, are smark dorks who act but don't look dorky. Nerds are generally academic in a general sense. Geeks are typically tech-oriented. Most all people who outwardly claim to be nerds or geeks are just pseudo-intellectual kids or teenagers who wish they were smarter than they truly are. True nerds, and some true geeks, often have a "Clark Kent" or "Peter Parker" complex: they don't proclaim they're as such, but rather they wish to be normal and/or at least accepted as viable members of society. Very few true nerds and geeks actually exist in contemporary society.

Most of the people posting definitions here are not true nerds.

Nerd

Wears checked shirts, sociable and intensely knowledgeable in the I.T feild, not to be confused with geek (antisocial, aspires to be knowledgeable), above all else a nerd owns excessive amounts of CAT5e cable, plus owns a laptop AND a lightly modded PC, this way he is never without a computer. The term nerd is of a high school playground origin. Nerds are generally feared and envied by none nerds, this fear is regularly disguised as hatred.

Nerd: Oh how I love to caress my PSU.
Popular kid: You're a geek.
Nerd: No sir! (goes on to give a detailed description of both terms)
Popular kid: Me and my thuggish friends are going to beat you up.
Nerd: Well at least I HAVE after-market thermal compound!

nerd

A person who goes to great lengths to describe the difference between a geek and a nerd to feel better about themselves, even though both terms refer to the same thing and regular people just pick any of the two interchangeably.

Normal Person 1: "That guy is a nerd"

Normal Person 2: "Oh yeah he's such a geek"

Geek/Nerd: "Actually, geek and nerd are different things. You see, nerds are socially awkward blah blah blah..." (Says this while raising his index finger)

Nerd

1. Often synonomus with 'geek' when not refering archaicly to a circus performer. A nerd is usualy secluded from mainstream society, intelligence is not as much of an issue as interests or converstional skills. Though it is possible that a nerd is isolated by choice, chosing to avoid those who do not share his or her interests or percieved intellectual ability.

2. An intelligent person shunned or merely chided because of his or her grades or aptitude at certain subjects. Definition 1 and 2 can be true of a person simultaneously.

3. Likely, due to poular media being considered 'nerdy' by those exceptionally low on the cognitive spectrum. Many self delcared 'nerds' roam the streats. With no social obstacles to overcome these are hardly the nerds they try to emulate and often lack even basic levels of nerdlike obsession. At best a more accurate word for these would be "quirky". At worst a definition would be "An unexceptional and socially active person with a passing interest in Video games, Marvel Superheroes, Harry Potter or Star Wars"

4. Anyone who openly admits to liking Manga or Anime. These are not always true nerds but are genrally considered as such.

5. Anyone who plays D&D. No exceptions.

1.
"Hey, did you play the Battlefield 3 beta?"
"No, I'm not really into videogames."
"Oh... Did you see the Alphas Season finale? Gary went all..."
"I don't really like science fiction... not my thing. did you see last nights game?"
"Sorry, I see no point in continuing this conversation."

2.
"I just built a working personal computer out of redstone in Minecraft! It's capable of running Linux or Windows!"
"$%^&ing nerd"

3.
"Yeah I've read every Harry potter book and seen each movie twice! I know, I'm such a nerd!"
"I have a polyresin replica of Harrys Nimbus 2000 on display next to my Alphonse Elric Armor."
"...That's wierd"

4.
"Hey, Want to watch some Fullmetal Alchemist after we get back from the triathlon?"
""$%^&ing nerd"

5.
"Want to spend hours in a basement playing an endless board game? It's like a video game with no graphics!"
