Selling a war to an unsuspecting public.
The seller, often a chickenhawk could be anyone with influence, such as an elected official or a talk radio blowhard, who paints the best possible picture of war, ignores the negative aspects of war, and warns of dire consequences of not going to war. Often war mongering hides behind patriotism and the loyalty of troops to deflect criticism.
By mentioning mushroom clouds, Shrub was war mongering, selling Americans a war by using fear tactics.
The war mongering Rush Limpbag said anyone against going to war was not supporting the troops.

1. Period of mostly low-key or cultural brinkmanship between the United States and (most typically) the now-defunct Soviet Union, which formally ended in 1991 and had been going on since 1946 or 1917, depending on who you ask. Occasionally got hot or at least fairly warm in places like Vietnam, Berlin or Korea. Supposedly the fight between democracy and Communism, but nobody hears about such brinkmanship with China these days.
2. Any protracted, sullen standoff between people.
3. The ongoing medical attack on the vast family of rhinoviruses responsible for a condition known medically as acute nasopharyngitis.

On urbandictionary, a thumb war consists giving your own definition a thumbs up and giving a rival's definition a thumbs down on a daily basis while said rival does the same for himself. A thumb war is won when one of the contenders forgets to vote and/or gets a life.
I hope the addition of this definition doesn't provoke a thumb war.
