goth punk

Some people who have added to this definition have an extremely poor understanding of what so-called 'goth punk' is. Its roots are in MUSIC, the fashion being something secondary that developed out of and was inspired by the mood the music evokes. Goth punk (also defined as 'deathrock' and part of the 'post-punk' movement) deals with themes of death and mortality, sorrow, despair, surrealism, fantasy, the darker side of the life of society, the supernatural, the occult, romanticism, the effects of psychological terror and trauma - just to name a few of the basics. The music of goth punk, (as opposed to the more traditional extremely fast and anger-based hardcore punk), usually exists within the realm of medium-fast, more danceable rhythms often including tribal tom-based drum sections for the verses. The music also often includes a synthesizer to accompany the drums, bass and guitar, which again, is something more traditional hardcore punk usually refrained from including. The result is more of a moody, introspective sound that takes one into the realms of imagination. The classic, essential deathrock (or goth punk) bands include: Christian Death (the original lineup with vocalist Rozz Williams), early TSOL, UK Decay, The Damned, 45 Grave, Alien Sex Fiend and The Cramps.

Keep in mind that there were also several 'dark punk' bands around the same time that, while not maybe being quite as 'gothic' in some regards, still had enough stylistic similarities to be worthy of mention. They include bands such as: The Adicts, The Adverts, The Mob, False Prophets, Wipers, Chrome and can't forget classics that bridged the gap between hardcore and darkpunk such as Black Flag, Dead Kennedys and The Misfits. One should at least check out the classic goth punk (or, as I prefer to call them, deathrock) bands before making comments on the genre. Keep in mind that while all these bands have similarities, they also have very distinctive sounds that set them apart from the others, as all good artists should, so don't think that just because you've heard one or two of the bands mentioned that you know what goth punk sounds like. Modern goth punk bands worthy of mention are: Cinema Strange and Cauda Pavonis.

pseudo goth

Anyone who tries to act "gothic," but isn't really gothic in nature.
Includes people who try to wear "gothic" clothing, get numerous piercings, or talk obsessively about darkness, death, and destruction, in order to either be cool, get attention, or be seen as dark and mysterious.
This does not apply to people who wear "gothic" clothing just because they like it, or people who really are goths. Psuedo goths are merely people who are posing as something they aren't.

The phrase also could be extended to those elements of popular culture that emulate the "goth" style or theme but are nonetheless mainstream in their making.

This could furthermore be extended to apply to some bands, but not nessecarily the ones listed in previous entries for this word.

1) Some pseudo goths were seen hanging around at the mall and terrorizing three-year-olds.
2)That shirt's pretty cool. The style's sorta pseudo goth, miked with raver.
3)That band is sorta pseudo goth.

Christian Goth

A Goth who believes Jesus is the son of God and everything else Christianity believes.

The good Christian Goths are the ones who are true to their faith and live their life as their beliefs entail.
The bad type of "Christian Goth," is one who tries to push other Goths into becoming Christian or worse is a (fake) "Goth" only because they want to convert others to Christianity. Mainly by either starting up a "Christian Goth band" or sponsoring an event that seems Goth oriented, but the unwilling victim doesn't know he/she is going to a Christian evangelism event until they walk into the place.

Real Christian Goth: "I might be depressed, but at least I believe in God and live my life right, and I am not going to push others into my beliefs but only lead by example."

Fake "Christian Goth": "Alright, how many new people we got at 'Damnation Fest' tonight? Eight? That's great, the new flier design worked and none of them suspected at all! Soon they will listen to some "Goth Music" about Jesus, and then we will give them some pamphlets warning them that they must become "Christian Goths" or burn in hell.

Pastel Goth

A fashion sub-culture (originated on tumblr) that is heavily inspired by Japanese "kawaii" street fashion mixed with elements of goth and grunge fashion. Usually worn with pastel, dark, occult, scary, and cutesy accessories and hair colors/wigs. Vintage elements are also welcome.

Commonly misinterpreted as a part of goth (it is a subset of goth) fashion and wrongly accused of being a poser fashion. Pastel goth is strictly a fashion asthetic, not an identity (no intention of involvement in gothic or grunge culture or music) nor do pastel goths/nu goths identify as goth, pastel goth, grunge, etc.

Pastel goth is also synonymous with creepy cute, pastel goth lolita, and nu goth.

I love how she coordinates her ripped black sweater and pastel purple skirt with hair bows and a studded choker, so pastel goth.

Real Goth

1. One who conforms to the Gothic subculture, as perpetuated by the late 80's/ early 90's kids that started it. Generally, a real goth is an intellectual individual, with interests in non-mainstream religion(s) or philosophy(s). Many prefered independant music and other media, over that of mainstream.
2. Someone smart enough to know that goth has nothin' to fuckin' do with CLOTHES!

Marcy said she was goth. Marcy said she was scene. Marcy proceeded to whine about every fuckin' thing under the sun, wear neon pink skulls all the fuck over, and listen to the crappiest, most mainstream music she could find (as long as the band wore eyeliner). All of Marcy's loser friends followed suit like the sheep they were. Eventually, the real goths got so sick of it, they stopped calling themselves gothic, so that they didn't have to be affiliated with losers like fuckin' Marcy.
