You say this dark/macabre humor phrase to lighten things up when both people have been discussing sad topics. You laugh a little bit because it is so bad to say and then you move on to talking about lighter subject things again. It is a segue (pronounced seg-way) / (a conversational bridge)from sad subjects back to lighter ones.
I find it very useful, although some people have not heard it before and they get confused and don't know what you are talking about, so you have to explain it to them. Then they laugh and you both move on to lighter subjects.
Wow, that's too bad that your friend's sister's hairdresser's brother got in a car accident and lost his pinky toe. (both people feel sad and there is silence and conversation is halted) and so another person says , "But other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play!" Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln? And that is a shocking and awful thing to say, but it makes people laugh because it is so shocking and awful. Do not say this though if something is really really sad, because it will not lighten things up and it will make people mad and hurt their feelings.

A sarcastic phrase meant to reveal a deceptive statement that downplays the significance of fundamental events.
"Other than killing him, I never heart him!" ... - Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?
"Other than all the names I called her, I never bulled her!" ... - Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

Best freakin school in Nebraska. Has the best soccer team ever. Has the most impressive marching band there ever was.

Located on N. Broadway and is primarily Latino, with a few Asians and Blacks. The area was at one time referred to as 'the murder capital of the world' given the inordinate number of gangs in Lincoln Heights.
Students roam the campus throughout the day getting high. The school matra is the 'F' word which is continually heard when not using the other 'F' word referring to homosexuals, however it's often used as a greeting of sorts. Many of the students have at least one parent in prison, thus the latest gang attire of wearing rosary beads around one's neck which has nothing to do with religion, but are passed down from incarcerated relatives to remind the 'wanna bees' not to follow their path.
The path to the Dean's office at Lincoln High School, East Los Angeles, CA is the most popular place on campus where the student's are rewarded with candy. The best time to visit this campus is after nutrition or lunch when the common areas are covered with trash ankle deep, typical of most LAUSD high school campuses. This seems to be the only time administrators are visible as they come out from hiding in their suits and ties to pick up the garbage in case the real 'suits' from the district drop by unexpectedly.
The school is filled with wanna-be gang members, illegal immigrants and stupid kids who don't want to learn and just take up space while draining tax payer's dollars and causing more crime. They also cannot read or speak proper English (as noted by the constant slang and ebonics that continuously comes out of their mouths). The graduation rate is roughly 30%.
It is uncertain what will become of these thuggish idiots when they enter the real world (other than picking up a nice drug habit, stealing from each other or from hard working citizens, or watching the world from behind iron bars).

A jokingly-sarcastic way of making light of a truly serious situation --- Abe was **shot to death** at the play's "ending", for goodness' sake!! :P
A couple of excellent occasions to dust off da ol' "So aside from the ending, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?" gag would be if either someone has just been helped out of the mud and is so incredibly soiled that he's having to be stripped naked and cleaned off with a pressure-washer, or you go to visit him in the hospital after a serious accident and he's all swathed in casts and bandages and/or hooked up to a myriad of tubes and wires, and so you're trying to cheer him up a little.
It's a phrase to highlight someone missing the point, purposefully or otherwise. It doesn't matter how good the play was, Mary Todd Lincoln watching her husband and then President of the United States Abraham Lincoln get shot in the head right beside her overshadows everything. It could have been the best acting ever but that's not what she was focusing on or what she'll remember.
In reference to the Aurora shootings
Person 1: "Oh my God, that's awful! Was the movie any good, at least?"
Person 2: "Besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
In reference to a controversial person
Person 1: "Yeah, Mike's an alcoholic, a tax cheat, beats his kids, and is a pathological liar โ but other than that, he's pretty cool."
Person 2: "Besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
When a person eases a lincoln-log up their anus, and twirls slowly.
When Jim got into the shower, he knew he was ready to be lincoln-logged.
