When someone is born a female but identifies as a male. Being transgender ftm, typically means that you are a boy trapped in a girl's body. Transgender ftm's typically use male pronouns, ex., he, his, him.
My friend Oliver is transgender ftm. He was born a girl but he identifies as a boy and uses guy pronouns.

Someone that was born of the female sex, but identifies and feels like a male. So someone who is transgender from female to male. Trans ftm is also known as transgender female to male. Not every trans guy wants to 'transition', or has the same idea of transitioning as you do. Some trans guys don't want surgery and some want only testosterone, some want surgery and some don't want anything.

Ftm & Mtf are shortened ways of saying "Female To Male" Or "Male To Female"
These terms are used for those of the trans community who are not their assigned gender at birth.
But I must mention that there are other types of being Transgender as it is an umbrella term.

FTM Transgender is a biologically born Female who just so happens to be born with a male mind which causes dysphoria which causes a lot of pain and suicidal thoughts
