A thing

It’s the stage where you aren’t quite dating, but you’ve both established romantic feelings for each other. It’s exclusive but not official.

β€œSo are you and David dating?”
β€œNo but we’re in a thing.”

the thing is is that

In the white American lexicon, this phrase means β€œthe thing is” but has somehow transformed to include the word β€˜is’ twice, colloquially.

β€œThe thing is is that Friends was a groundbreaking sitcoms, guys.”
