Origin: Bill W. the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, in social settings this phrase was used to explain why one did not drink alcohol without explicitly stating one's membership in this group which values its anonymity.

Q: Would you like a glass of wine?
A: No thanks, I'm a friend of Bill's.

A good friend

A good friend is someone who won’t drop you right after you do something bad. They’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and will always be there for you. It’s not someone who will tear you down, but build you up. If your friend seems to be jealous of you and keeps trying to compete with you, you should distance them for a while. But you have to be a good friend too or you can’t expect love from every person you meet. You might also need to our yourself in their shoes. They could be going through a rough time and trying to find themselves. But if your friend is constantly insulting you or saying they hate you, you never to drop them ASAP! Take a quiz maybe to see if they’re toxic or not. But if they’re not supportive of you and they always try to make you feel bad for doing stuff with other people and stuff then that’s a huge red flag! Your friend should be loyal, caring, and supportive.

You: I think I wanna switch schools

A Good friend: where? That’s exciting but I’m gonna miss you

A Bad friend: seriously? Ugh please don’t leave me! You always do this

Friend Thief

Introducing one friend to another, only find out that the two friends enjoy eachothers company more so than that of the original Introducer. Thus leaving the original friend of both, friendless.

John: hey Jake what are you up too?
Jake: oh just hanging out at my house, playing video games with Wally.
John: Why didn't you call man? You know I wanted to hang out tonight.
Jake: Well Wally was already here when I got home.
John: Wally is such a friend thief.

Just a friend

The term “Just a Friend” is used by the character Adrien in Miraculous used to describe his oblivious feelings for Marinette (the main protagonist)

This is also a triggering phrase for Miraculous watchers

First day of school and we already have two lovebirds.. Whatever, she’s ‘just a friend’.”

free friends

Somewhere you go by yourself or with another fellow loser (usually a sports bar or Irish Pub) where you can associate with people in a similar predicament and pretend you have something in common. Also, any activity you do by yourself that starts a conversation with a total stranger. This term can be applied to many things.

Patton Oswalt in "Big Fan" would go to the Giants game with his "friend" and hang out in the parking lot even though they didn't have tickets, thus....free friends among the crowd.

msn friend

one who you talk to on msn constantly but if you saw them in the street you would both act and feel like complete strangers.

Jerry got his msn friend sam's address from one of his other friends and talked to her a lot on msn; however when they met for the first time they acted like complete strangers and it was exceedingly awkward.
