Is Pi More Dog Than Cat?

When the feline behavior of the irrational and transcendental number π, which is stubborn in revealing some of its beautiful numerical or geometric properties, clashes with its oft-canine responses, which occasionally rewards those who have loyally spent their lifetime with the beloved constant with an aha! erection.

The number π is a love-hate mathematical constant among the educated lay public, who are delighted or disgusted by its manifold numerical and geometric properties. To number addicts, is pi more dog than cat? Or is it more cat than dog? To number phobics, pi is unquestionably worse than a pandemic.

Every pi has a phi lining

The mathematical equivalent of “Every cloud has a silver lining.” When the symbol π reminds millions of math-anxious students and their parents worldwide of their dreaded school math lessons, while the seldom-discussed golden or divine ratio 𝜙 would open their eyes to the beauty, utility, and ubiquity of mathematics.

If more people with a negative experience of school math were told that “every pi has a phi lining,” perhaps math wouldn’t get such a bad publicity among the school subjects.

Who ate all the Pies

1. Slang phrase in Mandarin Chinese for one who believes his or her friends are telling the truth regardless of how ridiculous and preposterous the things they are trying to tell him or her are.

2. One who gives his or her friends bragging rights to exclusively tease them for endlessly searching the Interweb for the definition of phrases.

Adeline: "We can't tell you... look it up online!"
