ringtone rap

the shitty new pop/hip hop that floods the radio. Ringtone rap is any of the singles from non-talented rappers such as d4l, mims, dem franchize boyz, huey and any of the other so-called rappers that all sound alike. Most often heard as tool-ass teenagers' cellphone ringtones, or on the radio for two weeks every other song. songs like this are the reason i smoke cigarettes.

alternative rap

Contrary to poular belief, gangsta rap is not the only type of rap. There are many sub-genres, such as alternative rap. Alternative rap or Underground rap is defined as a culture rather than just a musical genre. Underground rap and hip hop includes the various arts of turntablism, sampling, producing, breakdancing, visual art, graffiti, spoken word, beatboxing, freestyling, cyphering, and more. The music itself is distinguished by artists who are not promoted by major record labels, often because of their experimental musicianship and lyrical content. Many underground artists are also using hip hop to successfully communicate issues of social justice, global and political change, and collective consciousness. Underground hip hop beats are often characterized by the fusion of loops sampled from all genres of music, including classical, jazz, funk, rock, and punk. Although some listeners may associate live instrumentation with alternative hip hop, this distinction is invalid because mainstream rap acts such as J-Kwon use live instruments as well. Underground hip hop artists generally do not achieve the same level of financial success that commercial rappers achieve, although their work is often critically acclaimed.

Artists labeled as "alternative hip hop" musicians usually record and perform in styles that are more closely related to the original concepts and styles of hip hop music and hip hop culture, as opposed to their more popular commercial counterparts. DJ Kool Herc once said in an essay about hip hop, that "it's not about keeping it real. It's about keeping it right." In this sense, many would argue that alternative hip hop might not be so much an alternative as much as it is a continuation of the original concepts and ideals of hip hop.

MF Doom and Non-phixion are prime examples of alternative rap.

Rap Mechanic

The Rap Mechanic refers to hip-hop artist Pete Wurthy, aka "The Rap Mechanic". He often totes a larger than life pipe wrench that was passed down to him from his grandfather. The wrench tends to be the largest wrench most non-industrial mechanics have ever seen, especially on a stage during a performance. The Rap Mechanic is also known to spray his front row audiences with water in various forms.

Concert guy1: Did you see the Rap Mechanic? He totally just dowsed those people down front!

Concert guy2: I know! How come we can't ever get front row seats?!

Rap rock

Rap rock is a hybrid of rap and rock music.

You can usually find traditional instruments of rock like guitars, bass guitars, and drums. Vocals can be sung, rapped or both. You may also see electronic sampling equipment, scratch pads and a DJ.

Now here's the part that some kiddies can't seem to get right: Rap rock is a broad definition for the hybrid genre. Nu metal and rapcore are just specific examples of rap rock.

Nu metal tends to be heavier, harder music with electronic elements, it leans more towards metal (hence the name). Bands such as Slipknot, KoRn, and Godsmack fall into this category.

Rapcore is more of a hybrid between rap and hardcore punk (instead of metal). Bands like House of Pain, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine and some of the works of KoRn are good examples of this genre.

Rap rock is a genre of music in which labels can get a bit messy because people often think of Rap rock as being another name for Nu metal or Rapcore.

Shock Rap

A style of Rap where the lyricists rhymes about random and outrageous topics to "shock" the listener upon hearing it. The most well-known artist to adopt a Shock Rap style is EMINEM.

"I like happy things, I'm really calm and peaceful//
I like birds, trees, I like people//
I like funny things, that make me happy and gleeful//
Like when my teacher sucked my wee-wee in preschool//
The ill type, to stab myself with a steel spike//
While I blow my brain out, just to see what it feels like//
Cause this is how I am in real life//
I don't wanna just die a normal death//
I wanna be killed twice//
I just wanna scare somebody, with a gun threat//
When they're high off of drugs//
They haven't even done yet//
So bring the money by tonight, cause ya wife//
Said this is the biggest knife, she ever saw in her life//
I try to keep it positive, and play it cool//
Shoot up the playground//
And tell the kids to stay in school//"

- I'm Shady by EMINEM: classic example of Shock Rap.
