black metal

Black Metal is definitely NOT faggoth hot-topic Cradle of Filth or a band like Dimmu Borgir, whose live shows consist of smoke machines and girls in bondage dancing around. That is called GOTHIC METAL and is for disturbed high schoolers. Please get it right.

Black Metal IS a harsh, noisy offshoot of Thrash Metal based around Satanic ideals and Norse Mythology that came into being in the early 80's in Norway. Black Metal can be dissociated from Thrash Metal by its high-pitched unnatural screams made to sound demonic, its use of Blast Beats (32nd-note snare hits), syncopation, and costume (Corpse Paint, which is black and white make-up used to further enhance the demonic quality and hide the identity of the wearer). Band members also go by fabricated names.

The reason Black Metal revolves around these things is because it opposes the early Norwegian invasion of Christianity (which was brought by their own King Olaf in early A.D., not by missionaries as some think). Black Metal uses a pseudo-Grotesque method to offend society in their live shows, while simultaneously attracting listeners to the cause, with their use of Corpse Paint, blood and gore, and mock crucifixions that some bands put on during live concerts. Some of its scene members have burned churches. It is not a joke, except to some, who would like to pass it off as harmless. This is the REAL difference between a true Black Metaller and a poser.

Black Metal bands use terrible production in their records on purpose, veering away from the direction of society, and ALSO because many bands spend nearly their entire recording budget on cover art and have to do their own recording with inexpensive equipment.

There were a few waves of Black Metal bands, the first including Mayhem and Venom. Mayhem was the most central band to the original Black Metal movement, and a member of Mayhem had the first Black Metal record label based out of a small record store called "Helvete" (Hell). They also established the Inner Circle, a group of Black Metal bands who would organize against Christianity. Within this group, there were power struggles for "who was the most evil" that resulted in several murders of key Black Metallers.

There are a variety of Black Metal subgenres:

- Symphonic Black Metal (Limbonic Art, Sirius, etc)
- Troll Metal (Mortiis, Troll, etc)
- Melodic Black Metal
- Norsecore (Marduk, etc)
- Viking Metal
etc.

See Wikipedia if you want an in-depth definition of these genres and their related bands.

While Black Metal had a growing movement in the 90's, after about a decade of popularity, their movement has seriously declined.

Black Metal is Satan, Vikings, Burned Churches, Animal Parts, Crucifixions, Blast Beats, Forests, Trolls, Demons, Noisy Minor Chords, Screaming, you get the idea.

nu-metal

A modern, mainstream and watered down form of metal, often mixed with elements of another style, often rap/hip-hop. Famous bands include Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and System Of A Down. Some bands were more tolerable than others, but on the whole pretty much any band was played beyond the point of annoyance.

Nu-metal's marketing points are it's apparent 'coolness', songs structured with very simple musicianship (in keeping with grunge philosophies), the angsty lyrics, a marketable style which mostly fuses sportswear with grungier, baggier styles, and the feeling of being an outsider or one of the un-cool kids (this is quite ironic as most people who jumped the nu-metal bandwagon at it's height were popular people or became popular as a result). It is one of many fads employing the 'anti-cool' philosophy. Most people who adopt this lack the intelligence to see the irony.

Nu-metal gradually phased out as predicted, and the very same idiotic crowd would be seen later jumping on the emo bandwagon, which is popular at the time of writing. The style would drastically change from stupid baggy jeans to horn-rimmed specs, lip piercings, etc. Whatever fad, though, most scenesters have a LiveJournal account.

Nu-metal is reviled by dedicated metal purists, particularly classic metal and death/black metal fans. This is because it is seen as a false type of metal. Whether this is true or not, the point is defended by the fact that nu-metal was the epitome of crass commercialism. Tragic also, is the fact that nu-metal is the predominant perception of metal as a whole, which has led to would-be real metal fans writing off an entire genre of inventive and inspiring music.

Nu-metal has been phased out in favour of another fad.

Heavy Metal

A form of music that came about in the late 70's and reached its peak of success in the early 80's. It was the first form of "metal" music and it has roots in 70's hard rock. contrary to popular belief the term has nothing to do with newer metal genres as these genres should be referred to as simply "metal". The metal genres most similar to heavy metal are "speed metal" and "power metal". There are some heavy metal bands that started out as hard rock bands such as Judas Priest and Riot. These bands are sometimes referred to as "proto-metal".

Iron Maiden, Jag Panzer, Virgin Steele, Omen, etc.

Jag Panzer is a great heavy metal band!

Nu-Metal

Nu-Metal is a hybrid genre.
It combines the heavy rock genre 'metal' with different singing styles ie rapping. A perfect example of the is 'The Truth' by Limp Bizkit. Another good example is 'Spit It Out' by Slipknot. Within these bands there is also a m'ixer' who will provide sounds that cannot be created using convential instruments. Within the convential instruments guitars are often tuned down to give 'heavier' riffs. to compliment this the drummers will use the bass drum more often (and will usually have two bas drum pedels)
Pre-Nu-Metalers often look at the new genre with disregard as it is not ture rock music.

Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and Perfect Circle are all examples of Nu-Metal music.

nu-metal

corporatized, lobotomized, watered-down mainstream answer to the grind/death/crust music of the late 80s and early 90s crossed with elements of hip-hop, but lacking any of the things that made either form of music music great- i.e. guts, thoughts, belief, intensity, passion, speed, technical ability, a real reason to be angry. Nu-metal encourages kids to buy CDs at the mall, spend their money on stupid accessories at Hot Topic, and rebel against their parents when they should be rebelling against the system that built the mall they're shopping at.

Nu-metal is such a load of shit.
