Celibacy until a couple can get back together. When your long distance relationship is not working out, you take a break, meaning that you talk about the same amount, see each other the same amount, and have the same amount of sex. Basically the same thing as a normal long distance relationship!
My long distance girlfriend says we should take a break. Now that we are on a "break", she doesnt want me to see other girls, and she calls me just as much. She doesnt want me to go out because I might meet other girls. WTF?

Relationship limbo. Something that drama llamas do because they saw it on TV and they want their lives to be more like 'Friends'. Essentially these people model their lives on television programmes and probably think that soap operas are documentaries.
'Going on a break' is something that is suggested by one partner or another in a relationship (usually the woman, as most drama llamas are female) because they want to dump you, but don't have a very good reason. They are cowards and attention seekers. They know that when a relationship ends, the dumpee gets far more sympathy than the one that ended it because they basically have the moral high ground, and we all know how much drama llamas hate someone else getting more attention than them. Also, the one who is dumped is more entitled to have a rebound fling, so they try soften the blow by not going for the full break-up. This is an attempt to make themselves feel better about the situation. But in reality it means that if you start seeing someone else you can be painted as the bad guy. If they see someone else it's fine, the relationship ended, get over it. By dangling the prospect of reconciliation in front of you they're prolonging the drama of a break-up, ensuring that you're thinking about them more, and gives them a safety net of knowing they can come back to if they feel like it.
No-one ever went "on a break" before 'Friends'.

when a guy doesn't have enough balls to actually breakup with his girlfriend. he just wants to sleep around but doesn't think he can while he's in a committed relationship. hence, break.
Brian wanted to get drunk and stare at other girls because he's not hot enough to actually get them in bed, so he told his girlfriend ally that they should take a break because he needs "time."
