yacht rock

Another name for the adult-contemporary musical movement in the late 1970's and the early 1980's. It was defined mostly by its smooth sound. Popular Yacht Rockers include: Kenny Loggins, the Doobie Brothers, and Steely Dan.

Radio Rock is not a concrete term. It can refer to over-produced, generic bands, but also to innovative, popular/alternative acts that get frequent radio-play on a variety of FM stations.

Elton John, Coldplay, Myslovitz are examples of radio rock by this definition.

torch rock

A musical sub-genre using the classical blues/rock construct and instrumentation with an emphasis on the themes and deliveries of the "torch" singers. Term stems from the saying, "to carry a torch for someone".

Practictioners include Billie Holliday, Serge Gainsbourg, Pollux, Jimmy Scott and Nina Simone.

"It's a third date; I'm bringing candles, some torch rock and massage oil."
