Paranormal Pop Culture

Any trend or entry in popular culture or mainstream entertainment that focuses on the supernatural, paranormal or unexplained. Example: ghosts, paranormal investigations, psychics, cryptozoology, UFOs, aliens, vampires, monsters, zombies. First usage was July 2009 by writer Aaron Sagers, who calls himself a "paranormal pop culture expert"

Because it combines the pursuit of the supernatural in a mass media format, 'Ghost Hunters' on the Syfy channel is a hit Paranormal Pop Culture TV show.

Cultural Suspension of Disbelief

Agreeing to anything someone from another country tells you, no matter how far fetched it may seem, lest you be revealed as ignorant and insensitive.

"Marie Kondo says we should thank all our crap before we throw it away. It kind of sounds like she just made that shit up, but let's just practice a little Cultural Suspension of Disbelief. That must be how they do things in Japan."

Pop Culturally Intimidated

When you feel intimidated and irked either due to a lack of knowledge in trendy pop cultural/meme references, or from the fact that you probably have no interest in them. Usually happens when you're out with a new group of peers, and they be saying some memey phrase or sharing some pop cultural fad and you have no idea what it is or what it means (nor do you care). Likewise, this is also very commonly experienced on the internet, most notably in the YouTube comment section.

1) Jimmy felt very pop culturally intimidated by his girlfriend once he found out that she knew more pop cultural references than him.

2) Matt joined his new group of female peers to work on a course-related project. While he didn't have trouble socializing with them, he felt extremely pop-culturally intimidated by the odd memey phrases that their peers were tossing around and giggling about. Then, they started sharing pictures of Korean guys and went on talking about their favorite kpop star. "Stop. Please...", he wished to tell them.

Culture wash

Similar to white washing, culture washing is when a person of color (mainly Latino or African-American) calls for something to be diversified, so that they may feel more comfortable with their own racial insecurity. For the most part, culture washing is done by big time corporations in the entertainment industry, so that they can make an easy buck by pandering to different crowds and feeding certain agendas.

Culture Wash Example 1:

"Hey Tyrone, did you hear they're making the Little Mermaid black?"

"Really? Shit nigga, I'm gonna have to see that!"

Culture Wash Example 2:

"Ey, I feel like they should make Superman latino, he is an alien after all, and his only weakness is something that's green!"

"Carlos! You may be on to something holmes!"

Culture wash example 3: "Okay guys, what beloved television character are we going to diversify next?"

Cancel culture enforcer
