Butt Rock

A popular term referring to a sub-genre of hard rock strongly influenced by post-grunge and nu metal. Originating in the mid-late 90s, butt rock is comprised of raspy vocals, similar to Pearl Jam, Creed, or Nirvana, backed with radio-friendly guitar riffs, drum beats, and basic bass lines.

Generally found on CBS owned radio stations across the Midwest, Great Plains, and Southwest, butt rock is overly commercialized, processed music that lacks innovation and creativity. Butt rock predominantly targets a demographic of blue collar workers, generally men 18-45, that drink cheap light beer, have a fascination with big trucks, avidly watch Monday Night Football, and are wannabe UFC fighters.

Women that listen to butt rock are usually huge fans of Guns N Roses, and are drawn to the sub-genre by the subconscious influence of corporate agenda, or out of sympathy for their significant other’s terrible local band.

Butt rock groups include Nickelback, Seether, Theory of a Deadman, 3 Doors Down, Breaking Benjamin, Staind, Puddle of Mudd, Three Days Grace, Five Finger Death Punch, amongst others.

nerd rock

A genre of music believed to have found its orgins in the late 1970s with new wave, has since evolved to a subculture of alternative rock distinct from Nerdcore. Also known as Geek rock. Popular bands with the nerd rock 'sound' include DEVO, Weezer ( the band perhaps most commonly given the label)and Fountains Of Wayne. Optionally, they can wear thick sweaters. In ways similar to emo.

"Have you heard Weezer's latest album?"
"Um, no, and, like, I'm sooo not gonna. That's, like, nerd rock. Only, like, a total dork would listen to them. Uh."
"You're sooo wrong my preppy friend."

Nu Rock

Although there is no genre of music that has been officially dubbed 'nu rock', many see nu rock as another name for post-grunge for sounding similar to nu metal without the metal feel and the elements of hip-hop. Although post-grunge isn't commonly known as nu rock, many believe that if you had to call any kind of music 'nu rock', it would have to be post-grunge more than anything.

"Who's your favorite nu rock band?"
"Nu rock? You mean nu metal?"
"No, nu rock. You might know it as 'post-grunge'."
"Oh! In that case, my favorite 'nu rock' band would have to be Creed."
