A statement that is allegedly so self-evidently true that it cannot be argued against, thus extinguishing any debate on the subject under discussion. It is often employed by those that don't understand the issues and don't wish to reveal that ignorance.
"I don't like all this new building in rural areas." "Well, you can't stop progress!" "That's a typical fire blanket statement, just what do you mean by progress?"
"I am against making ID Cards compulsory" "I don't see the problem, if you've nothing to hide, whats the harm?" "Stop using a fire blanket statement, its not about hiding anything, just personal privacy!"

Making an assumption or giving an opinion of a general group or idea
“Star Wars fans believe their creator's have destroyed their brand!” Well, that is a blanket statement, just because a show or movie doesn’t make everyone happy it is very manipulative to speak on behalf of everyone else. I’m talking to you content creators on social media. It’s pathetic to trigger people so they can click on your story or ad. Hate does not sell, it’s just depressing and bullish. You know who you are.
