classic rock

Classic rock is a style of music that arose in the late 50's/early 60's out of the then-popular blues genre. It was mainly derived from British teenagers who attempted to emulate the blues movement in the U.S. but created a whole new style all their own. Classic rock is known for its warm, overdriven guitar sounds, unique drumming patterns, melodic vocals, and simple yet innovative chord progressions. 90% of classic rock is based off the I-IV-V chord progression, and yet it all sounds different-quite an accomplishment if you ask me. Some of the best music in the world falls in the classic rock genre. In the 70's, classic rock began to progress and sound more modernized, with bands such as Journey, later Pink Floyd, and Boston spearheading the movement. Classic rock is not to be confused with southern rock.

Some well-known classic rock bands are Led Zeppelin, Cream, AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix, Dire Straits, Queen, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, ZZ Top, Journey, Boston, Foreigner, etc...

classic rock

An umbrela term for a large aray of guitar-driven music; much of the music falling under the term come from vastly different time periods and much of it have very little in common. This allows groups such as the Sex Pistols and The Beatles to be held in the same context. An example of confusion this term perpetrates is that Steely Dan and Boston are the same genre. This sort of confusion continues into infinity. Any guitar-led band from 1965 to 1989 has probably been considered "classic rock" on a few occasions.

Joseph: "Say, Mel, I hear the kids are calling Guns 'n' Roses 'classic rock' these days."

Melatrophine: "They call Bob Dylan and Neil Young 'classic rock,' too.

Joseph: "I must say, thay makes no sence at all."

classic rock

A collection of hits from various genres and bands from the 60s, 70s and 80s, generally played on classic rock stations. It is a distinctly American phenomenon (that is, other countries do not have classic rock stations per say) and generally features North American and British/Irish bands.

Pink Floyd's album, "Dark Side of the Moon," is part of the classic rock canon. Their earlier albums, such as "Meddle," are not.
