Farm upstate

Term generally used by parents to explain the absence of a family pet. While sometimes meaning the pet has truly been rehomed, it generally is a euphemism for the animal dying, disappearing, being put down, or given to an animal shelter.

Child: “daddy, where did fluffy go?”
Father, covered in scratch marks: “well sweetie, fluffy went to live on a farm upstate…”

living on a farm upstate

Being euthanized.

Buster got sick, he got a disease called 'rabies'. But a nice man came and volunteered to take care of him. He's going to be living on a farm upstate where he can run and play.

living on a farm upstate

Dead; no longer among the realm of the living.

Guy: Hey, did you hear about Bill?

Girl: No, what happened?

Guy: He's now living on a farm upstate.

Girl: Oh no, when is the funeral?
