The Jedi (/ˈdʒɛdaɪ/) are the main protagonists in the Star Wars universe, alongside the Rebel Alliance. The Jedi Order is depicted as an ancient monastic, academic, meritocratic, and quasi-militaristic organization whose origin dates back approximately 25,000 years before the events of A New Hope.
Jedi were powerful Force-wielders and adjudicators tasked by the Galactic Republic to be the guardians of peace and order in the galaxy; they defend and protect all sapient life, never attack. The Order consisted of polymaths: teachers, philosophers, scientists, engineers, physicians, diplomats, negotiators, warriors, and peacekeepers. A level of diversity extends throughout the organization, composed of hundreds of different species and thousands of different worlds, some outside the Republic itself. When operating beyond the limits of Republic territory, they act autonomously and make decisions with the potential to affect countless lives. They were often the first representatives of the Republic encountered by new species and nations.
Jedi philosophy emphasized self-improvement through knowledge and wisdom and selfless service through acts of charity, citizenship, and volunteerism. The Jedi denounce emotions as the root cause of mortal suffering; they believe fear, anger and love cause sentient beings to lash out in conflict and impede rational action to do what is objectively correct action. A Jedi’s traditional weapon is the lightsaber.
Have you ever heard the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the wise?
No
I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you.
The Jedi are a fictitious order of warrior monks who play an important role in the 'Star Wars' movie series by George Lucas. They were responsible for the maintenance of peace and order in the Galactic Republic, and were skilled in various mental disciplines from domination to psychokinesis. In addition to these powers, a Jedi novice was expected to construct his or her own lightsaber in order to qualify as a fully-fledged Jedi Knight.
The Jedi were most likely based on one of the real world's eastern religious traditions. Much of their symbolism has parallels in certain branches of Buddhism.
Trivia: Contrary to popular mythology, there is no officially-recognised Jedi religion. An Internet prank at the time of the 2001 UK Census informed citizens that if enough Census forms were received giving 'Jedi' as the religion, it would have to be recognised by the state. However, this was never the case, and the Jedi 'religion' remains entirely fictitious.
Singular: A Jedi, or a Jedi Knight.

1. The singular term denoting a member of the Jedi, which is a fictional order of warrior priests that is depicted in the Star Wars media franchise.
2. A person who is either highly skilled at some task, or who is an extraordinary practitioner of some occupation. The word 'jedi', when used for that purpose, is usually preceded by the word that denotes that particular task, and followed by the word that denotes that particular occupation (e.g. barbecue jedi, jedi mechanic).
Yoda, the Jedi master, emphasized to his students that a jedi's power flows from the Force.
Did you see that awesomely rad Power Point presentation that Schuyler made? I swear, he's like a Power Point jedi.
Well, the toilet is finally fixed, thanks to my brother, the jedi plumber.
A Jedi is a warrior in the Star Wars saga. They are people with exceptional skill, they can sense things that are happening/will happen, can move thing with their minds and have the ability to sometimes use 'mind tricks' on people to trick them. They wield light sabers, which are very light and elegant to use, unlike blasters.
Jedi are keepers of the peace, which means keeping the Force in balance. Before becoming a Master Jedi, they are trained as Padawan Learners, and then are taken as an apprentice by another Jedi. They learn from a young age and have rules to abide by.
