luck of the irish

This isn't luck at all, but more of an attitiude, a positive look at a bad situation.

The Irish didn't survive a potato famine, and being treated as 3rd class citizens upon their arrival to the U.S. (til the mid-late 1900's)by not having a positive outlook and a great sense of humor!

Mary-"I was just wearing my new shoes today when I stepped in a HUGE cow shit"

Michael-"Well then, tis a LUCKY thing you were wearing shoes!"

Mary-"Yea, Luck of the Irish"

luck of the irish

During the gold and silver rush years in the second half of the 19th century, a number of the most famous and successful miners were of Irish and Irish American birth. . . .Over time this association of the Irish with mining fortunes led to the expression 'luck of the Irish.'

That miner must have the luck of the irish.

Luck of the Irish

A term that has it's roots in the ironic fact that the Irish are not that lucky at all. Originating from the 1800s, the "Luck of the Irish" referred to their bad luck, having throughout their history suffered famines and invasions that took millions of lives. When the Irish began emigrating on mass to the United States, Canada, Australia and Great Britain, to escape the Emerald Isle the phrase "can you believe the luck of the Irish" was frequently used.

John Lennon - If you had the luck of the Irish
You'd be sorry and wish you were dead
You should have the luck of the Irish
And you'd wish you was English instead!

Luck of the Irish

An American phrase, not an Irish one. Used to insult Irish immigrants that came to America during the gold rush.

The Luck of the Irish was to say, only by sheer luck, as opposed to brains, could these idiots find gold. It’s outdated and offensive.

-John got his promotion at work, all the hard work paid off!
- Ah that’s the luck of the Irish for you!
