money earnin' mount vernon is the city that heavy "d", denzel washington, and dick clark hail from. (to name a few) (yeah i hate hate dick clark too but whatever) no matter where a kid grows up here they can walk to a ghetto or a extremely wealthy neighborhood, thus creating a keene sense of social class division at a young age...
which can explain why the middle to lower class people from here will forever be chasing paper, and the wealthier people will forever be moving out of town.
Middle Class Person: "Today I walked the length of Gramatan Ave. South to North.. at first I felt as I may get jumped, but by the end people looked at me as I may jump them."

Money earnin', the sister city of Yonkers. Was part of the town of Eastchester in colonial times.
Mount Vernon is near Yonkers and the Bronx.

often thought of as the ghettoest place in westchester, mount vernon actually contains one million dollar houses in overlapping areas neighboring country clubs in the "elite" bronxville, eastchester, and tuckahoe towns made up of very irish and italian imigrants. the other half is a scaryass place that half the city has never been to, you know, or else they'd get shot.
Person One: "I live in Mt. Vernon."
Person Two: "Oh..."
Person One: "No, no, but I REALLY live in Bronxville."
Person Two: "Ohhhh!"

Mount Vernon is a town split in half. A bridge divides this 4 square mile town between a ghetto and a pretty nice surburban neighborhood. Unlike some of the definitions of my counterparts, the dividing line is not black/white, it is between urban/surburban. My whole family is "white" and I grew up on the ghetto side. So, by default, there must be more than one or two white people. Sorry guys your definition is inaccurate.
Mount Vernon also has an underfunded public school system, which suited me just fine. Life is what you make out of it. You can grow up poor on the ghetto side of mount vernon go through an underfunded school system and still make something of yourself.
Mount Vernon is the exact opposite of some of its neighboring towns. You have to work harder when your from Mount Vernon to get certain places, but it is worth it. Mount Vernonites learn the value of hard work.

A city that's getting more and more dangerous each day. I grew up there and its really sad to see what goes on in Mount Vernon today. Gunshots are a normal sound now. If you see something red on the sidewalk, its blood, not a popsickle stick that a kid dropped. So much stuff happens there that it isn't even put on the news anymore.
My uncle was carjacked in Mount vernon two days ago.

Really not more ghetto than Yonkers at all, a somewhat misunderstood place. It would be hard to argue that Mount Vernon is "so bad" when in fact the part of the Bronx it borders is really not that bad at all. Someone try to tell me that 233rd St & Baychester Ave is the hardcore Bronx. It could probably pass for suburbia! Together the two areas pretty much look like a clone of the North Shore of Staten Island - a distant, jungle-like ghetto.
However, South bleeker st is definitely one spot to avoid
