A sort of "middle man" on the internet. Normally when you go to a website, you send your "request" packets straight to the site's server, and then the server sends "reply" packets back which is what you see as the website. With a proxy, you send your request packet to a server, which then sends a new request packet to the website's server, which then sends back a reply to the proxy's server, and the proxy sends the web site to your computer. This can be used for anonymous surfing on the web. Not all proxys are anonymous, though. Some just edit the packet they send to have your IP address instead of the proxy's, then the reply goes straight to you.

A server which enables you to browse the internet privately under a different IP Address. It basically emulates you browsing the web on a different computer hooked up to a different internet connection. Due to proxy servers being remote and possibly far away from you, they are usually slow or slower than your normal internet speed. Using a proxy server does not mean that your computer does not record your internet history, which will have to be cleared by you manually. Also, see proxy server.
1) You are advised to use a proxy server when you're browsing porn or performing illegal online activities because it makes you anonymous, decreasing the chance of you being identified.
2) Because Urban Dictionary determines whether you've liked a definition based on your IP Address, you can use proxy servers to like your own posts or like posts multiple times.

Internet tool used by:
1. people to retain their anonymity.
2. trolls to evade bans on websites.
3. idiots to access websites they shouldn't be accessing when they should be working.
Proxies are usually marketed towards the latter.
