pander

1. To act as a go-between or liaison in sexual intrigues; function as a procurer.
This could be like a pimp or anyone who gets one party to have sexy feelings for another party who is already interested.

2. To cater to the lower tastes and desires of others or exploit their weaknesses: β€œHe refused to pander to nostalgia and escapism”

Middle English Pandare, character who procured for Troilus the love of Cressida in Troilus and Creseyde, poem by Geoffrey Chaucer (ca. 1342–1400)

pander

Noun: One who manages/solicits prostitutes, a pimp or procurer.

Verb: To procure prostitutes for customers.

To flatter or cajole people, to cater or appeal to their emotions/worries/prejudices/expectations for one's own gain; to engage in demagoguery.

The pander was slick in advertising his harlots, but I rushed off instead.

Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, and the Tea Party pander to homophobia, the NRA, oil companies, capitalism/corporations, anti-immigrant groups, pro-life groups, any number of unworthy causes. Worse still, they combine that pandering with "American Values", "Family Values", and "Jesus"/"Christian Values", thus cheapening the integrity of a whole nation.

Some media pundit: "Joe the Plumber! Hockey Moms! Protect the Sanctity of Marriage, Protect the children! I love America...*sob* *sob*! Never Forget 9/11...!"

Some viewer: Enough of those shticks already! Don't pander to me!

Pandering

A manipulative device used by politicians to agree and support the popular view of a particular group or groups of people in order secure their vote. Although the philosophy or interest of this particular politician is not necessarily in tune with that particular group, he or she will appear as though he or she agrees with a particular group, particularly during the election season, in order to win his/her sear.

The interest of particular groups may be somewhat farfetched, including creating Utopia's for them to live in or to achieve the so called "rainbows" and "butterflies" they so want to have. But, if that is what the educated politician has to agree with in order to win on election day, then he/she will do it.

Gullible Citizen: I want the government to help us pay our mortgages, pay for our kids to go to college, and help pay our utility bills.

Politician's mind: This may be pure pandering because there is NO way the government should or can take care of any of those requests; but, i guess I'll have to say "sure thing".

Pandering

(In creative media) When something has a target audience that you are not in.

Gay person: I thought that movie about gay people was pretty good.
Cinephile: Seriously!? That shit was blatant pandering. you should watch some quality cinema like Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. It has everything: fight scenes, rock music, a 5'11 Canadian toddler who looks like Michael Cera having sex with someone who looks like Ramona Flowers...
