Polarysis

A state of society where the loudest voices are the two extremes and centrist opinions are unpopular.

Individuals are expected to be either one of the two extremes and those who choose to think for themselves are frowned upon.

Right-wing and left-wing polarisers refer to themselves as ‘speakers of the people.’

They denounce all other schools of thought as ‘the elites’ or ‘the establishment.’ Those who disagree with them are ‘snowflakes’ in the right-wing case or ‘fascists’ in the left-wing case.

In the end it doesn't matter what their policies are, all of the common themes apply. It's them against a small group of people they blame all of their problems for that they've never met. They completely favour one economic system and frown upon the other.

They engage in spaces where the only exposure to disagreement is amongst themselves.

Often groupthink is encouraged or experts are deemed completely untrustworthy, and rarely ever a balance.

Person 1: Man, have you seen the state of society since 2016? You're either with Team A or Team B.

Person 2: Yeh, man it's a state of polarysis!
