read-viewing

A method of viewing complex films (and filmed versions of plays, especially), in order to see and hear the actions of the plot, but also to read what is happening, while the story unfolds.

When teaching students complex plays by Shakespeare or Arthur Miller, an English teacher might employ the method of read-viewing of the play so that students can see what is happening while reading the subtitles/closed captions. Read-viewing engages students in the visual world of the story, which helps to improve comprehension of the literature. Ideally, this method would be used in short increments of 20 to 30 minutes, and then students will discuss and analyze what they have read-viewed.
