relij

A sense of value for the "way things are done". A nostalgia for the habits of oneself or one's community in the past that creates a certain fierce loyalty to them in the present.

Relij derives its etymology from 'sacrilege' (yielding the possible alternate spelling of 'rilege'), which is an unquenchable desire to break tradition and resist doing what has been done before. Relij is its opposite: instead of viciously breaking traditions or ridiculing them, relij upholds, strengthens, and praises them.

"Marianne's got relij; she plants dahlias in the front garden every year."

"The block party is a blast every year cause everyone shows up and brings their favorite dishes, favorite people, and favorite games. The relij is strong in this town."
