Supper is the main meal of the day. Most commonly misunderstood by ignorant people as dinner. Dinner was defined by Webster as a meal eaten in the middle of the day. Many cafe's, restaurants in America were known for their dinners which were served during the hours of 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Many were actually named the Dinner Bell (meaning lunch)
Schools actually called the midday meal as dinner time.
Supper was referred to as the meal at the end of the day. Lunch was something you brought from home. Dinner was something prepared for you.
