A Styrofoam Scot or a “Styro” is a person usually (but not always) from the USA or Canada who is overly obsessed with Scotland and their Scottish heritage. They confuse heritage with nationality and claim to be a Scot themselves without ever living in Scotland, experiencing a Scottish upbringing or the culture firsthand.
Many Styrofoam Scots romanticise Scotland and base their view of the nation around popular media that does not represent modern day life such as the series Outlander or the movie Braveheart.
Common actions of Styrofoam Scots include wearing ill fitting “kilts”, bragging about their high percentage of Scottish DNA from an Ancestry test or getting a tattoo of a cheesy quote written in poorly translated Gàidhlig.
Harmful behaviour carried out by Styrofoam Scots include claiming to be more Scottish than people who live within the country due to race or DNA, explaining Scottish issues to Scots in a condescending manner and completely taking over Scots Wikipedia. The latter causing extreme damage to the Scots language due to thousands of articles written in unintelligible Scots by an American born Styrofoam.
Online behaviour includes Styros referring to the Scottish people as “Scotch” or “Scotts” and scolding Scottish nationals for their colourful language and rough sense of humour. After “getting telt” and having the complete piss ripped out of them by real Scots they are often severely offended and proceed to throw a tantrum or fall into a “Styro Sulk”.
“Aw naw a Styrofoam Scot made liquified stovies. It’s pure geein me the boak!”
“Shut up Ron. No one cares about your 23 and me results. You’re nothing but a styro!”
“Check the nick o’ that Styrofoam’s kilt!”
“That’s no even a kilt. It’s a fuckin skirt Greg!”
“Did ye hear aboot thit Styro basturt. Pure fucked up the Scots Wiki. A cannae understun any of the pish he’s wrote!”
