The Sweetgum Creole, also spelled Sweetgum Kriyul more often, are a large group of Creole people of West African, Western and Northern European, and Native American descent. Many have genetic ties to the Yoruba people of West Africa and to the Cherokee and Sioux Indigenous American people.
The Sweetgum Creole are divided into several tribes such as Ethnic Qarsherskiyan, Lumbee, Melungeon, Chestnut Ridge People, Carmel Indians of Ohio, and others. Chestnut Ridge People and the Carmel Indians of Ohio have been categorized as a sub-group of the Melungeon tribe. Ethnic Qarsherskiyan people and the Lumbee people are separate Sweetgum Kriyul tribes with their own heritage and cultures.
