Slashes followed by any combination of letters that end a sentence, paragraph, or overall message.

The purpose is to let the reader know what the implied tone of the previous text is.

Common tone indicators include: /j (joking) , /s (sarcasm) , and /srs (serious). There are multiple lists online that include various tone indicators and their meanings.

Tone Indicators

A very useful thing. Some people might find it cringe, but tone indicators are seriously useful for anyone who finds it hard to understand the true meaning or implications in someone's texts, especially someone you don't know well. I would go so far as to say it's an evolution in our way of communicating online. They should really be used more often by people who naturally text in a cold and dry manner.

Scenario π˜„π—Άπ˜π—΅π—Όπ˜‚π˜ tone indicators involved:

Person 1: Hey wanna play minecraft together?
Person 2: ok
Person 1: ??
Person 2: what
Person 1: Is that like a genuine ok or a sarcastic one or...
Person 2: I just meant ok
Person 1: Ohh, gotcha. Sorry my brain kinda interpreted it like you thought I was bothering youπŸ˜…

Scenario π˜„π—Άπ˜π—΅ tone indicators involved:

Person 1: Hey wanna play minecraft together?
Person 2: ok /gen
Person 1:πŸ‘

See how much less problematic the 2nd scenario was?

tone indicator

A thing that start with a slash and are used to indicate how the person is using their sentence. Used over text due to the fact that it's hard to get certain things across that you might verbally. (i.e sarcasm, jokes, singing)

Sometimes useless.

Tone Indicators

Used by mostly children terminally online when they need to perfectly understand what someone means in text. Examples range from /srs (serious) or /j (joking). Some people claim its for autistic use. It usually makes the person using them negates anything they say because they are very sensitive. The people that ususally use these are twitter or tiktok users.
