yellow blazing

Hitchhiking.

Comes from the Appalachian Trail, which is blazed white, and side trails blazed blue, so highways are jokingly said to be "blazed" with yellow lines down the middle. Accusing a hiker of yellow blazing their way around a difficult section of the trail is considered insulting.

How'd you get ahead of me? Yellow blazing again?

yellow-blazed

adj. Term Describing a light-industrial trail (at least a 2-track) found in forests or parks adjacent to hiking trails. Describes a trail of easy terrain, usually circumventing dificult terrain on normal trails.

v. The act of using a non-standard/access road-style trail to bypass dificult terrain on a hike.

"...because I had yellow-blazed about 195 miles in order to hike with a partner rather than be alone again after recuperating from my knee injury."
