Abolish 702

275,000 instances of people's constitutional rights being violated.

FBI Guy "But it's fine because we'll just try super-duper to not do that anymore but we need it... For like.... Defense?"

Hym "And what is the ACTUAL ratio of active threats stopped vs violations of people's rights and failures? Because I know there was one school shooting that was reported to the FBI because he said online that he was going to do it and then a year later he did it. And then there's ME. So that is (at the very least) 275,002:? To what? 275,002:10? 285,002:100? I find it hard to believe that you have used what is essentially a surveillance apparatus to stop more that 275,002 active threats.

And what it SOUNDS like you're saying... Is that it doesn't matter that you violated the rights of 275,000 people and potentially fail to stop active threats more often than you succeed... Because you can just scapegoat individual FBI agents and then keep the surveillance apparatus and that's supposed to be just fine with everyone? And what exactly has happened to the people whose rights were violated? Are they even aware that that is something that has happened to them? I mean, it sounds like you should have a class action lawsuit on your hands. Unless, of course, you're trying to claim that having your rights violated doesn't damage you in any way. No. I think they need to tell the FBI Guy to go fuck himself. Abolish 702. You need to find a different way of doing you job that doesn't run the risk of violating people's rights."

FBI "But we can tweak it so that stop violations of rights AND keep the surveillance."

Hym "What could you possibly change about a surveillance apparatus to prevent the violation of rights what the surveillance apparatus IS the violation of rights? 'Surveillance apparatus' and 'violation of rights' are synonymous in this instance. And how have these people whose rights you've been violated been made whole since the violation of their rights? It think you just need to abolish 702."
