Barmp

Newfoundland-English verb meaning to honk the horn of a vehicle (cars, trucks, boats, ships) It is onomatopoeic in origin as it imitates lower-pitched sound of the horns of American cars and trucks of the β€˜50s, β€˜60s, and β€˜70s as opposed to the higher-pitched β€˜beep’ of the European and Japanese imports that began to become more popular following the β€˜73 OPEC oil embargo.

Jimmy was drivin’ down Water Street in his restored β€˜74 New Yorker when he saw his buddy, Dave. He barmped his horn and Dave looked over and waved at Jimmy.
