deadplace

"Deadplace" refers to the attempt to define a person's origins attributed to them by their place of birth, rather than accepting an individual's right to self-define where they are from and how they self-identify.

The origin of "deadplac(e)"-ing stems from "deadnam(e)"-ing of transgender people, wherein others attempt to define someone according to a name that is in fact "dead" in that it is no longer used or recognised as appropriate to the individual's own story.

"I may have been born in Detroit, but I only lived there until I was 15 year old. I have lived 36 years in San Francisco. Do not DEADPLACE me by calling me a Detroiter--I am a San Franciscan."

"I was born in Syria, and have lived in the USA since I was 3. I am a US citizen. Don't DEADPLACE me by telling me to go back to my country...I am in *MY* country."
