Ice melt socks are designed to prevent rooftop ice dams and winter roof leaks caused by melting ice flowing under shingles and into structures causing massive property damage.
Ice melt socks are designed for use on flat or sloped roofs. The socks, shipped empty, are heavy-duty non-hygroscopic, polyester weave, that resists tearing or absorbing water and remains flexible in freezing temperatures. This unique ice melt sock material allows water to permeate the weave freely in all ambient temperatures. Snow and ice turn to liquid when they contact the sock and water flows through the material to dissolve the solid deicer inside the sock. The deicer solution then flows off the roof to deice gutters and overhangs. Typically free form wrap seals allow the sock to hold 3-16 pounds of deicer crystals each. The socks are easy to fill, attach to roof and to remove at the end of winter. The bags may typically are machine washable and may be refilled with deicing crystals as needed.
The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation recommends CMA similar to EZdeicer as the preferred deicing crystals when deicing roofs.
If you have ever used a "ice melt socks" before, you know that they provide an inexpensive method for removing roof ice dams and improving your home's heating efficiency.
Roof ice dams are an annoying source of roof damage, leaks, and heat loss in the winter.
The main causes are drip melt from improperly capped warm air vent pipes and poor roof insulation.
Laying a snow melt sock onto the roof so it crosses the ice dam and overhangs the gutter
will melt through the snow and ice and create a channel for water to flow down into the gutters or off the roof.
