To screw up really badly. As in a way that makes regular mess-up's look like peasants in comparison to the royal proportions of this particular mess-up.

King: Yeah, the date was going fine until I got in my car to leave and messed up royally.

King: Well, I backed over her cat in the driveway... and then made a joke about it.
