the origin of the phrase is contested; it is presumably derived from (1) the scaring left on the arm after heroin injection (also called "moon craters"); (2) a corruption of the expression "sling moon rock;" (3) the name of a show featuring an all-female-superhero cast sailor moon (i.e. "heroines").
