Formerly called "dementia praecox" by Emil Kraeplin, and renamed "schizophrenia" in 1911 by the Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler. About 1% of the adult population in the United States is affected by schizophrenia. The DSM-IV lists three specific types of schizophrenia: disorganized, catatonic, and paranoid.
