the term comes from phrase low quality. A person, not worthy associating with, such as: one consumed by an esoteric hobby, one laking the motivation for self-improvement or one decreasing others' quality of life.

You should dump this low-q and date somebody cool.
I know my brother is a low-q, but there is nothing I can do about it.
