People's Park

Piece of university land seized by "the People", in Berkeley, CA, in May 1969. Gardens planted by anti-war protesters, and the park occupied year-round, first by hippies, and ultimately by the homeless. After trying repeatedly to evict the squatters and build new dorms, the university finally gave up and let the people who wanted to, shape the park as they please. Now safe in the daytime, but not at night. Panhandlers abound. Just 100 feet from Telegraph Ave., the other hippie remnant of the 60's and 70's in Berkeley.

I'd rather go down Telegraph than thru People's ParK right now. Too muddy!
