A meme is something that cannot be described in a mere sentence. It is a phenomenon that defies rational boundaries and basic reasoning. I suppose it's a trend of sorts, but in reality it's something between a trend and a zeitgeist. A Meme is described on the internet as "a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users", but can be much more. It can be an event or a topic or really anything that becomes re-used, and sometimes it evolves into something new so fast you might not be able to recognize it afterward. Memes can rise and slowly gather fame, or they can skyrocket to the very top in days. It's a process that is as infinitely varied as the evolutionary path of life itself.

Trying to define a meme though is like trying to define exactly what consciousness is. You can do it in a rudimentary sense, but there are so many sub-genres and different uses that it's tricky if not impossible. My advice is to do the research yourself and build your own definition. That's probably the best way.

Bob: "Yo m8 look at this new meme I just made."

Joe: "That has 5 views and no one has reposted it. I'm pretty sure it needs to be popular first."

Bob: "Maybe it's a spicy underground meme."

Joe: "Did you just make that up?"

Bob: "Maybe, maybe not. I could have just randomly created a term to explain myself, but odds are someone else has already used this excuse elsewhere in the world, and if enough people do that then perhaps the term itself is a meme, which may also mean that whatever the subject of the meme term is is also designated as a meme in some shape or form."

Joe: "The fuck?"
