It could signify it was left on for too long, or there is a serious error with the fans inside the console.

The console, if broken inside its warranty period, can be fixed for free.
Four rings signify a AV cable error, and causes all 4 rings to go red. This happens whenever the AV cable isn't detected, or there is something wrong with it. 4 red rings usually mean the console's AV cable has been unplugged, and can easily be fixed by plugging the AV cable back in to the console.
