A form of Covert Narcissism commonly known as Noble Narcissism, Martyr Narcissists will appear to others initially as a helper and self-sacrificing. This behavior is often motivated by the need for admiration, acknowledgement or praise rather than actually helping the individual(s) in need. Martyr Narcissists are experts with PR in their communities and often easily fool unsuspecting people who may know them on a surface level. This type of Narcissist is considered part of covert narcissism, which is more dangerous than Overt Narcissism.
Martyr Narcissists utilize self-perceived victimhood to garner the attention of others for validation or sympathy. They may use examples of hardships as a way to elicit emotions and garner trust from strangers. Rather than being altruistic, they look for acknowledgement over efforts regardless of the outcome of the individual(s) they supposedly helped.
Sue runs a suicide prevention 501(c)(3) but is unable to provide documentation showing her organization's mission is actually effective. Most of Sue's funding goes towards her personal income. She has received acknowledgment of her efforts on a state level and in her community. Sue has many extended family members that have suicidal ideation due to her unhealthy family's abuse cycle and her active roles in perpetuating abuse dynamics. Sue also believes her ability to self-serve/help others supersedes the credentials of mental health professionals trying to help the same demographic.
Example: Sue told a child rape victim she "asked for it," because the perpetrator was Sue's adult brother. She assisted in silencing the child due to the risk of her family's reputation of severe alcoholism, repeat sexual assault/incest, and abuse becoming public. She even went so far as convincing the victim's father to donate his estate to her organization. If the public discovered the unethical behavior to this child and other family members, this would jeopardize her ability to garner sympathy for her 501(c)(3). Sue is a classic example of a highly functional Martyr Narcissist and will likely never be investigated or found out due to her ability to abuse her victims into silence. Sue uses the her public persona as a means to gaslight her victims.
A woman who suffers from an unfortunate combination of HPD, BPD and NPD but self-diagnosed her problems as âADHD.â
Symptoms often include a pattern of temporarily and obsessively creating new personas to confuse others for lack of accomplishments and accolades. She exhibits pathological and compulsive lying, canât maintain long-term employment, a stable relationship and often plays the victim when confronted. She is perpetually enrolled in a âprogram,â but is unemployable due to her deceptive unethical behavior and unnecessary need to create chaos. She may have multiple side jobs but incapable of supporting herself. Often exhibits mirroring techniques to be ârelatable.â Will create false stories to mimic individuals she engages with.
Previous treatments in the past would have included a lobotomy or a disappointment room. Itâs important to understand the parasitic nature could negatively affect the psychological health of those she comes in contact with, children included. If you encounter a woman with Sarah Louise Syndrome, it is best to not even be cordial or acknowledge her existence, as any form of interaction could negatively affect your happiness and cause PTSD. There is no treatment for human parasites but with implementing boundaries, you may find those with this syndrome scurry or recoil once publicly confronted and held accountable.
Michelle: I canât believe she had the entire class convinced she was a victim for an event that never occurred!
Abby: I know, she created problems where problems did not exist. I was there when it supposedly happened. Oddly, she provided two different stories depending on who she spoke with causing classic triangulation manipulation. To evade accountability, she painted a picture that she was being targeted when confronted over her behavior. Iâm glad the professor is aware.
Michelle: Sounds like she has classic Sarah Louise Syndrome. Iâm sure she will leave the class and enroll in a new one with a completely different backstory.
Abby: Yes, sounds like a complex case of multiple mental disorders that negatively affect the people who come in contact with her. Iâm sure she will move to another area once she burns all her bridges again, it sounds like she specifically targets areas where she has anonymity temporarily .
Michelle: Yes, that is often how Sarah Louise Syndrome is successful in evading proper treatment. Everyone else will always be the problem and it may take a while for people who come in contact with her to âconnect the dots,â but itâs inevitable with the parasitic nature of this syndrome.
Abby: Makes sense. She is a middle-aged woman with multiple excuses and exaggerated theatrics. Itâs off-putting to anyone who is not unstable themselves.
