UrbanDictionary

An online open-source dictionary for researching internet semantics and online sociology. Users can create accounts and post definitions for free and with minimal content filtering policies to stop them, which offers a significant insight into the sociopolitical climate of social media.

I've cited multiple UrbanDictionary entries in my recent article on internet sociology. You'd be surprised at how clear a picture you can get of it through a resource as simple as this one.

Compound Acronym

An acronym where each letter is used in a more creative manner to express more meaning than a simpler letter-for-word acronym would enable.

BDSM is technically an acronym, but not a traditional letter-for-word acronym like "TSA" or "LMAO". Instead, the term BDSM acts as a compound acronym. It stands for "Bondage and Discipline, Domination and Submission, Sadism and Masochism". If that term were expressed as a conventional acronym, it would be written out as "BDDSSM", and so consolidating the redundant letters of the acronym and expressing the term as a compound acronym, "BDSM", makes for a term that is far easier to say.

Anapara

Shorthand for "Analysis paralysis", a phenomenon frequently observed in individuals with ADHD or organizations with excessive strategic analysis policies. Also known as "the homework effect".

Analysis paralysis is when one becomes so caught up in the planning process of a large task, trying to find the most efficient way to do something, that the task remains unattended to until it's too late.

user1: "yeah, I just get so caught up in trying to plan out my next move that I end up having to make a shit move just to avoid taking up too much time"
user2: "I feel that. Chess can get pretty hard, and anapara sucks ass. I can run through a game with you to help tutor, if that would help."
user1: "ye let's try that"

bread pudding

A dessert consisting of chunks of stale bread soaked in a sweet custard mixture before being baked. Often paired with a thick vanilla sauce. Despite the strange concept, it's a very easy dessert to make with often disproportionately delicious end results. Be warned, however: if you make this recipe for an event, its attendees WILL start hounding you to make more and more of it for them in the future. It's just that good.

I made some white chocolate bread pudding for my mom's birthday party last week, and it turned out really good! So good, in fact, that now people won't stop talking about it with me...

Classical argument

A more refined form of argumentation from simpler times. Unlike modern argument, where one party seeks to assert emotional dominance over the other through the employment of manipulative tactics, classical argument involves the pure exchange of information and growth of one's own understanding of the world. The outcome of a classical argument is the mutual growth of logical fluency, where both parties are able to recognize flaws in their own reasoning and leave with an improved philosophical maturity.

"We had a classical argument about the nature of free will in my philosophy class yesterday. It was super informative and really fun!"

Inside joke

A joke pertaining to a friend group or online community, through which it is exchanged exclusively. Similar to memes, but more specific to a smaller, more clearly-defined group of people.

friend 1: "Guess it's time for you to go get your own boat, then!"
friend 2: "Ha! You smartass, you!"
stranger: "Uh... was that a joke or something...?"
friend 2: "Oh, it's just a silly little inside joke. Don't sweat it."

NJRA

Acronym: "No Judgement, no Reservations, no Abuse." Acts as the equivalent of the Hippocratic oath for mental health professionals or anyone offering counseling in an interpersonal or professional context. Each part of the acronym has its own specific meaning:
- No judgement: Any NJRA counseling offered will be free of personal judgement, aside from any explicitly requested analyses of a given situation that would necessitate it.
- No reservations: Any NJRA counseling offered will be unbiased and unassuming beyond established context and clarifications made. Help should be offered without discrimination.
- No abuse: Any personal knowledge gleaned through NJRA counseling will be maintained in confidence and not be abused for the purposes of blackmail, rumor spreading, or other negligent social behavior.

Person 1: "You wanna talk about it?"
Person 2: "Eh... I dunno..."
Person 1: "No sweat, pal. NJRA."
Person 2: "Huh?"
Person 1: "It's a counselor's term; no judgement, no reservations, no abuse. Period."
Person 2: "That's... oddly reassuring. Heh."
Person 1: "Of course. What's weighing you down, friend?"
