The Lowcountry is a mostly flat or rolling hills geographic area of South Carolina bordered on the east by the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean and to the west by the Piedmont or Midland areas of the state.
The border between the Piedmont region("Upstate") and the Atlantic Coastal Plain(the "Lowcountry") is called the Fall Line to mark the line where the upland rivers "fall" to the lower Atlantic Coastal Plain.
SC has several geographic areas starting at the eastern border of the state at the Atlantic coastline with the flat lands of the coastal Lowcountry to the rich rolling farmland in the Midlands and Piedmont areas,to the lovely Foothills and finally the Appalachian Mountains in the upper NW part of South Carolina.
Three geographic land areas define South Carolina; the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the Piedmont, and the Blue Ridge region. The eastern Atlantic Coastal Plains are referred to locally as the South Carolina "Lowcountry" and the Piedmont and the Blue Ridge region as the "Up Country
