desert theory

a theory of punishment that is retributive in nature and involves giving out a punishment that the offender deserves, without considering other factors, such as rehabilitation.

Also known as 'just deserts.'

Judge Tough does not believe in rehabilitation -- he only subscribes to the desert theory of punishment.
