pipe the rock

To examine a diamond, usually a diamond ring worn by a woman who has just received it as a gift from her boyfriend/fiancee/husband.

Derived from the examination of a stone by a jeweler using a jeweler's loupe, which he holds up to his eye and which is shaped like a very short pipe.

Sue: Hey, we got engaged last night!
TIna: Oh, wow! Did he give you a ring?
Sue: Yeah, pipe the rock!
