Marcos Apologist

A person, usually of Filipino heritage, who relativizes the dictatorial rule of Ferdinand Marcos, president of the Philippines between 1965 and 1986. Marcos, elected for 6 years, created a martial law dictatorship. The result was a brutal 20-year regime responsible for the systematic terrorizing, torture and death of approx. 85,000 citizens. Critics were murdered, newspapers censored, and thousands disappeared without a trace, never to be found. Marcos and his wife Imelda were also proven to have plundered circa 10 billion US dollars from the nation's coffers. Ultimately, the clan was ousted during the People Power Revolution of 1986, after the military cut ties with the dictator.

In 2022, millions of young voters were duped and brainwashed by the clan into believing that the Marcos era was one of golden opportunity and economic growth, by means of denial, fake news, paid troll accounts and terrifying historic revisionism.

A Marcos Apologist goes to great lengths to downplay or even deny the events and repercussions of the Marcos dictatorship, many of which influence the Philippine nation to this day. He/She is typically either too young to have experienced the terror of the regime, or used to be a loyal crony during the Marcos presidency. Such apologists are recognized by their lack of critical thinking, determination to glorify or rationalize the brutal regime, and/or by their willingness to downplay even the worst deeds of the Marcos days.

My colleague told me he doesn't believe that Ferdinand Marcos Sr. killed tens of thousands. He says, his presidency was a glorious era for the Philippines. He even told me Marcos never stole any money from the nation. I can't believe it. I'm working alongside a Marcos Apologist.

The biggest Marcos Apologist of them all? Bongbong Marcos, the son of the dictator, himself a thief, grafter and corrupt monster.
