The semi-colon has quite a few meanings as of recent times.
In punctuation, the semicolon is used between two independent clauses (i.e., clauses that could stand alone as separate sentences) when a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) is omitted.
It also can be used as a sign of respect to those who deal with depression and a sign that its not the end, like in the Semicolon Project which was created for those who were going through struggles with self-harm, depression and suicide who could have stopped moving forward, but didn't. The reason the semicolon was used as the symbol of the movement was because in a sentence, it is the punctuation mark that separates two different ideas.
In a punctuation sense:
The upperclassmen are permitted off-campus lunch; the underclassmen must remain on campus.
As in the tattoo:
I got a semicolon tattooed onto my arm to show that it wasn't my end yet
